The First Time I Met Pat

The first time I met Pat is a time I will always remember. Pat arrived
at my house with his friend Bob and I remember thinking to myself, great
another mouth to feed. I know what a rude person I seem to be but that
is not and was not the case, at the time it seemed like everyone who was
staying here with us had a friend in need and I don't know how to turn
people away so I asked our landlord if I could have yet another guest
for a few days and was told yes . A few days turned into a few months,
typical for around here but back to what I was saying. When we met he
was this large man with the brightest sparkling blue eyes I have
encountered in a long time and also the biggest smile. He was introduced
to me and he shook my hand and instead of saying hello he told me a
joke. For the life of me I do not remember which one it was he told me
so many, I knew right from the start that this was someone I could get
along with. It was a couple of days later that I found out why Pat
needed a temporary place to stay. Someone that he had bought a van from,
had stolen the van back from Pat which had all his belongings and what little money he had left in it when they had stopped at the casino to gamble for a minute. I am assuming he ran into Bob there, and needless to say, ended up here at the property. I was just sickened by what I had heard and it was a
good two weeks before he got another check so he was allowed to stay
longer. A few days after that I found out that he had a couple of
serious medical issues and needed bandages. Bob was a very good friend to
Pat, he went and got Patrick everything he needed. I never actually saw
his legs as I have a weak stomach, but was told how very badly he needed
to start taking care of them. Me, acting like the property mother, marched
down to where he was. I had hardly even talked to him in that time
frame, but here I was getting ready to chew this guy out for being a big
dummy. I walked in, saw the look of complete pain on his face diminish as
he looked up, smiled at me and said, "Oh I was wondering if I had been
dreaming before." I looked at him confused and said," Huh?" He continued
grinning from ear to ear, "Well I thought when I came here I had met a
beautiful girl with a kind heart but all I have seen since have been
toads and shrews. " I laughed so hard that I had forgotten why I had
gone down there in the first place. We sat there and talked for about an
hour when for a split second that pained look washed across his face
again. Mother mode kicked in and I told him he needed to go to the
doctors and get his legs treated. I stood up to go and he handed me a
Pepsi and a Hershey's big bar, smiled at me and told me," these things will
help you stay so sweet." (What a ham.) I told him he was a nut. We
both laughed as I exited the room. I again told him to get his rear
end to the doctors. He told me he would but I honestly don't think he
did. Yes, Patrick was an amusing guy, definitely full it but still very
sweet. I think it would be fair to say I liked Patrick right from the
start.
